Sign-dependent nonlinear response of directional couplers

Abstract:

We present a simplified local-mode analysis of the nonlinear directional coupler. This novel approach predicts a splitting in the transfer function when assuming different signs for the nonlinearity, in agreement with the results of the Beam Propagation Method.
